The study of ophthalmic pathology combines basic human pathology with the clinical spectrum of ophthalmology. In contrast to many other subdivisions of human pathology, the optimal application of ophthalmic pathology requires specialized handling of tissue, unique processing and sectioning demands, and clinical knowledge of the vast range of ophthalmic disease. Therefore, the proper pathologic evaluation of ocular tissues, and especially whole eyes, requires special training and knowledge not usually available from the general or surgical pathologist. If eyes are improperly handled or processed, information vital to patient care may be lost.
